Contributed by: NAPSA Get The Skinny On Carbs Sharon McNerney, registered dietician, said it's important for people to understand how low-carb diets work. "Carbohydrates are sugars your body breaks down to gain energy," said McNerney. "When the body doesn't use carbs for energy, it stores them, and when the body can't store anymore, they are turned into fat." The aim of low-carb diets is to force the body to use stored fat as its main energy source, therefore causing people to burn fat and lose weight, said McNerney. Although low-carb diets have been successful for many, some people fail because of their inability to stay away from high-carb foods such as sweets and desserts. "It's important for people on low-carb diets to find foods that satisfy their waistline and their sweet tooth," said McNerney. Jacques Pautrat, master pastry chef and co-founder of Jacques Gourmet, which helped introduce meringue cookies to the United States with its Miss Meringue line in 1997, said he has seen a huge increase in consumer demand for dessert items that are carb-friendly. "People who are concerned about carb-intake don't want to sacrifice the sweet taste of desserts," said Pautrat. "That's why we began offering Miss Meringue Sugar Free Cookies." Miss Meringue Sugar Free Cookies have zero net carbs and are available in Vanilla, Chocolate and Dulce de Leche (caramel). The meringues are fat-free, diabetic friendly, lactose-free and cholesterol-free. In addition, the cookies are low-calorie and have no artificial flavors or preservatives. "The meringues fit into every eating routine and can be eaten alone or as part of other great-tasting low-carb desserts," said Pautrat.
