Summertime Distractions

Contributed by: News Canada

(NC) - When trying to ensure kids eat the recommended five to 10 servings of fruit and vegetables every day, watermelon is an easy sell. While it isn't hard to get kids to eat watermelon, there are ways to make it more fun.

Summertime Distractions
"With a peak season running from May to October, watermelon is the fun fruit and is truly a kid favorite," says Leslie Coleman, Director of Communications for the National Watermelon Promotion Board. "These watermelon creations are a great way to keep kids busy in the summer. Also getting them involved in making their own meals is a great opportunity to develop good food habits and reinforce healthy choices."

When it's time to beat the heat, step indoors and create a summertime Jack-O-Melon! A happy face carved onto a hollowed watermelon makes a perfect decoration for evening patio and pool parties! Or make some Crazy Cut Outs by taking a whole watermelon slice, cut approximately 1 1/2" thick, making a large round disk with the rind on the outer edge. Then use cookie cutters to cut out your favorite fun shapes. Frost the shapes with vanilla or other flavor of yogurt and sprinkle with granola for a great snack!

Along with being a fruit kids love, watermelon is a good source of vitamin C, thiamine, vitamin B6, and a source of vitamin A, pantothenic acid, magnesium and potassium (per 150 g serving). It is also a great hydrator for active kids playing in the summer sun.
