Coca-Cola - your secret ingredient in summer cooking

(NC) - Summer's all about barbecuing, relaxing outside,
Thick Barbecue Sauce
enjoying warm evenings fragrant with food that temps the eye and palate, with a mouth-watering promise of things to come. Little do most people know that Coca-Cola Classic soft drinks are a secret ingredient to creating some truly refreshing dishes. In fact, according to Phil Mooney, an archivist with The Coca-Cola Company, using Coca-Cola as a sweetening agent goes back to the early 1900's.

Try this easy-to-do spicy sauce to use on frankfurters or burgers.

  • 2 medium onions
  • 3/4 cup Coca-Cola Classic
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Shred or blender-chop onions. Combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil; cover pan; reduce heat and simmer about 45 minutes until sauce is very thick.

Stir occasionally. To serve, heat frankfurters in sauce or spoon sauce over cooked burgers.

Serving Size: Makes About 2 Cups
