Cheerios Breakfast Smoothie

Nutrition and learning go hand in hand

(NC) - Good nutrition, especially at breakfast and lunch time can give your child a definite advantage at school and not just when it comes to learning. Research shows that children who eat breakfast do better academically but the benefits go beyond this.

Cheerios Breakfast Smoothie
Hungry children find it harder to concentrate and can become irritable. It makes sense that if you get hungry and cranky you won't get along with others as well as when your body is getting the energy and nutrients it needs. It is also hard to learn new things when all you can think about is how loud your stomach is rumbling and how long it is till lunch. Whole grain breads and cereals will help your child feel full for longer and provide important nutrients. Try to choose whole grain options more often and visit www.areyougettingenough.ca to learn more about whole grains.

Here is a recipe that combines three of the four food groups, including a whole grain cereal into one delicious drink that your child will love:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (250 mL) yogurt (any flavour)
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) Cheerios cereal
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh, frozen or canned fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple, mandarins)
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) milk
  • 1/2 banana, sliced
  • 2-3 tsp (10-15 mL) sugar, or as desired
  • 2 ice cubes

Directions:

Place all ingredients in blender. Cover and blend on high speed for 10 seconds; scrape sides. Cover and blend about 20 seconds longer or until smooth. Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Fruity Cheerios can be substituted for original Cheerios cereal.

Give your child the nutrition advantage they deserve so they can feel great and perform well every day at school.

Serving Size: Makes 2 Cups (500 mL)
