Directions:

For The Basket:

  • 1 loaf (1 pound) frozen bread dough, thawed for 1 hour at room temperature
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tube (4.25 ounces) green decorating icing
  • 1 tube (.68 ounces) pink decorating gel
  • 1 tube (.68 ounces) yellow decorating gel

Special Aids

  • 7-inch deep cake pan or springform pan
  • Round metal bowl with 7-inch rim (bowl rim should match the size of the cake-pan rim)
  • Leaf tip for tube of decorating icing

Making the Basket

Preheat oven to 375¡F. Cover the outside of a deep 7-inch cake pan and a 7-inch metal bowl with foil; grease the foil. Grease a large baking sheet.

On a floured surface, roll dough into a 16- x 14-inch rectangle; cut lengthwise into sixteen 1-inch strips.

To form a basket, arrange 6 dough strips vertically over bottom of cake pan; weave 4 dough strips horizontally through them. Trim strips even with the rim of the pan, reserving scraps. Weave 3 more strips around sides of the pan, stretching strips slightly to fit and pinching ends together to seal.

To form a basket handle, braid remaining 3 dough strips together and place handle across the bottom of the prepared bowl, trimming excess dough even with the rim.

To form the basket rim, gather dough scraps and divide into 2 sections. Roll each section into a 22-inch-long rope. Twist ropes together; place around rim of bowl, pinching ends firmly. Pinch dough together to seal where basket rim and handle meet.

Transfer pan and bowl to the prepared baking sheet; let rise for 15 to 20 minutes.

Brush basket pieces with egg; bake until golden, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a rack; cool for 10 minutes. Remove pan and bowl; remove foil. Turn off oven. Return breads to baking sheet; place in oven until dry, about 30 minutes.

Assembling the Basket

Attach a leaf tip to tube of green icing. Pipe green icing around top edges of basket; top with rim and handle.

Pipe leaves onto basket. Using pink and yellow gels, pipe petals onto leaves.
