Back Ribs at Home

Juicy, tender "stick to your ribs" ribs (NC) - Looking for the perfect rib recipe to please friends and family? Have you wondered how to prepare ribs prior to cooking so they are full of flavour and so tender the meat literally falls of the bone?   • 2 racks of back ribs (24-30 oz. a rack)
  • 2 oz. rib spice
  • 2 cups water


Preheat oven to 300°F

Spice ribs on both sides liberally with rib spice (see below for recipe).

Place ribs in a shallow pan, bone side down, and spice ribs again with remaining spice.

Pour 2 cups of water into pan, cover pan tightly with saran wrap and then foil wrap.

Place in preheated oven and bake for 2 hours, remove pan from oven and carefully remove wrap.

Let ribs cool for 10-15 minutes and sauce with Montana’s Cookhouse Signature Barbecue Sauce (purchase at a Montana’s Cookhouse Restaurant near you). Wrap individually with saran wrap and store in refrigerator until needed.


Place cooked ribs directly on a barbecue set at medium heat, brush liberally with Montana’s Cookhouse Signature Barbecue sauce on both sides. Cook until sauce caramelizes, and serve.

Pork Rib Spice

  • 2 tblsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 2 tblsp. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 2 tblsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp. black pepper

Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl, cover and store in a sealed container. It can then be frozen for future use or stored on a pantry shelf.
