(NAPSA) - The humble hamburger is turning 100! While there is some debate over its origin, most food historians agree the burger "officially" debuted at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. Fletcher Davis-a.k.a. "Old Dave"-served a ground beef patty between slices of bread at his food stand. Since then, the burger has become what is perhaps America's most beloved sandwich.
In honor of this milestone birthday, Sutter Home Family Vineyards is offering a $50,000 grand prize in its 14th Annual Build a Better Burger(r) contest. Burger devotees are encouraged to submit their ultimate burger recipes. Entries will be accepted now through August 31, 2004. Ten regional finalists will be flown to the Napa Valley to compete in a heated cookoff on October 2, 2004, judged by some of Napa Valley's most illustrious chefs.
Jeffrey Starr, culinary director for Sutter Home, considers the burger the icon of American food. "Burgers today can range from the basic to the gourmet-which is what I love about them. You can incorporate so many different ingredients and flavors to create something truly original," says Starr.
Here's to 100!
You may automatically think of drinking beer with burgers, but wine is often a better choice. "Wine brings out the flavor in foods and creates complex, enticing tastes," says Starr. "Burgers are a great way to explore food and wine pairings to see what you enjoy. I suggest starting with the basics-there is nothing like a glass of Zinfandel paired with a hearty sirloin burger."
Build Your Burger
To honor the burger's roots, the 2004 Build A Better Burger contest is offering a $50,000 grand prize to the most creative take on the classic beef burger. For complete rules, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Build A Better Burger, Sutter Home Winery, P.O. Box 248, St. Helena, Calif. 94574-0248. Contest is not open to residents of California or Utah. Build A Better Burger is sponsored by Sutter Home Family Vineyards, Cattlemen's Beef Board and National Cattlemen's Beef Association, TABASCO(r) Chipotle Pepper Sauce and the California Avocado Commission.
Combine ground beef, 2 tablespoons Chipotle Pepper Sauce and salt in a large bowl and mix well; shape into 6 patties.
Combine mayonnaise with remaining 1 tablespoon Chipotle Pepper Sauce and mix well; set aside.
Grill or broil hamburger patties to medium doneness (160¡F). Spread mayonnaise on buns and top with burgers, onion, tomato, lettuce and avocado slices.
For Chipotle-Avocado Cheeseburgers, place one slice Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese on each burger (after cooked to desired doneness), just until cheese melts.
Serving Size: Makes 6 Burgers
