Cheerios Breakfast Smoothie

At least half of your grains should be whole!

(NC) - Science is unravelling the mysteries of whole grains and we're learning more all the time about their health advantages. So that Canadians can reap the benefits of whole grains, Canada's Food Guide recommends that at least half of all grain products that we eat each day should be whole grains. Sadly, according to an Ipsos Reid poll from 2008, 6 out of 10 Canadians are not getting enough whole grains.

It's not difficult to up your intake of whole grains. Switching to whole grain cereals and breads is an easy first step. From there, try choosing whole wheat pasta and brown rice. Next, get adventurous with side dishes or salads based on whole grains such as oats, barley or quinoa. With baby steps such as these you can gradually make a huge impact on the quality of your diet.

Reading food labels will help you identify whole grain foods. But be careful. Foods that claim to be "multi-grain", "100% wheat" or even "high fibre" are not necessarily whole grain. Look for the words "whole grain" or "whole" to ensure you are getting the benefits of the whole kernel of grain.

Prep Time: 2 Min | Total Time: 5 Min

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (250 mL) yogurt (any flavour)
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) Cheerios cereal
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh, frozen or canned fruit (raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple, strawberries, mandarin)
  • 1/2 cup (125 mL) milk
  • 1/2 banana, sliced
  • 2-3 tsp (10-15 mL) sugar, as desired
  • 2 ice cubes

Directions:

Place all ingredients in blender. Cover and blend on high speed 10 seconds; scrape sides.

Cover and blend about 20 seconds longer or until smooth.

Serve immediately.

Serving Size: Makes 2 Servings
