School Snacks That Make The Grade
(NC) - Even with a healthy breakfast and great lunch, children need snacks throughout the day. Their stomachs are small and snacks provide them with the in between meal boost that keeps them functioning well. The trick is to provide snacks that are quick to eat, easy to prepare, nutritious, tasty and fun to eat.
Some of the best snack ideas are natures original snack foods like fresh fruit, nuts, seeds and raw veggies. If you stock your cupboards properly, there are lots of other grab-and- go options, like whole grain crackers and muffins-and the Cheerios line of cereal is also whole grain with a 'honey nut' and fruity flavour that is really popular with kids. Keep in mind that many people do not get enough whole grain in their diet. Choosing whole grain snacks is one way to remedy this problem. When you have a little spare time on the weekend, prepare a snack food that you can make in bulk and keep on hand to add to school lunches whenever you wish. Take a look at this one:
- 4 cups (1 L) Cheerios cereal
- 2 cups (500 mL) pretzel sticks
- 1 cup (250 mL) nuts
- 1 cup (250 mL) popcorn (alternative to nuts)
- 1/4 cup (50 mL) margarine or butter
- 1 tablespoon (15 mL) Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon (5 mL) paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) garlic salt
Heat oven to 275 F (140 C). Stir together cereal, pretzel sticks and nuts in 13x9x2 inches (3.5 L) pan; set aside.
Microwave butter in small bowl (or 1 cup/250 mL glass measuring cup) until melted. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, paprika and garlic salt. Pour over cereal mixture, stirring until evenly coated.
Bake 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Store in airtight container.
