Think outside the school box lunch
(NC) - Sandwiches are a staple item in many school lunches but after a while they can loose their charm. If you find your child's sandwich is returning home barely touched, it's time to think outside the box and try some new ideas that take the place of sandwich bread.
Here are some great alternatives to sandwich bread, most with whole grain versions. Many children and adults do not eat enough whole grain foods. You can find some easy ways for you and your child to get more whole grain online at www.areyougettingenough.ca.
- Mini or full sized Pita Pockets with a favourite filling
- Tortilla rolled up with a favourite filling
- Pasta Salad
- Whole Grain Cereal
- Whole Grain Muffin
- Whole Grain Kaiser
- Submarine Bun
- Hot Dog Bun
- Pizza Bun
- Tortilla Chips (packed along with salsa)
When possible, pack lunches the night before. This will help with the morning rush. Encourage your children to get involved in the planning, shopping and preparing of their lunches. Children are more likely to eat foods they have helped to prepare.
