Beat the heat with cool summer treats

Summertime's hot and sticky weather calls for a patio prescription: cool treats to keep parents and kids hydrated and happy. Hamilton Beach, makers of small appliances that are ideal for the summer season like blenders, ice cream makers, drink mixers and ice shavers, suggests these hot tips for keeping your cool:

Beat the heat with cool summer treats

  • For a cold drink that won't taste watered down by ice in the heat, fill freezer containers with fresh fruit juice, sweetened tea or lemonade. When ready to serve, shave the frozen beverage into a glass, garnish and enjoy.

  • Limit alcohol intake, which combined with sun exposure, can cause heat stroke or exhaustion. Non-alcoholic daiquiris, margaritas and smoothies are better choices for daytime get-togethers.

  • Avoid storing ice cream in the freezer door. It will lose its creamy texture due to the temperature change that occurs every time the door is opened.

  • If unsure of what setting to use on the blender, PULSE or HIGH will work best for most recipes.
