Mustard is a must with party foods
(NC) - Be sure to add mustard to your grocery list, or keep a supply of both the powdered and prepared kind on hand, if you want to tantalize party guests with your finger foods this season. While mustard has long been a condiment of choice for sandwiches, hot dogs, meats and sausage, it also adds zest quickly to a wide range of recipes.
Very few manufacturers' names are so firmly linked in our mind as Colman's is with mustard. Here are some popular dishes from their party menu:
Merry Mustard Dipping Sauce
- 2 tbsp Colman's powdered mustard
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp oregano/garlic/Italian spices
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
Mix first 5 ingredients in a small saucepan. Add the sugar and beaten eggs. Cook on low until thickened and sugar dissolved. Chill. Serve with cubes of cheese, cocktail franks, or with cold cuts.
Santa's Brandied Mustard
- 1 tbs flour
- 1/2 cup Colman's powdered mustard
- 1/4 cup boiling water
- 3 tbs sugar
- 2 tbs cider vinegar
- 1 tbs brandy
- 1 clean jar with tight fitting lid
Prepare one week before needed. Combine dry mustard and flour in a bowl. Stir in boiling water. Let mixture stand for 40 minutes, stir occasionally. Add sugar, vinegar and brandy stirring until well blended. Fill jar, close lid tightly, and cool. Delicious as condiment, spiced hot with distinction.
It may interest you to know that Colman's was originally established as a family business in Norwich, England more than 180 years ago. The founders and directors of this famed English mustard were considered pioneers in their achievement with 19th century social welfare. For employees they were among the first to establish a school for company children, a nurse for the sick, a hot lunchtime meal at cost, and an old-age pension scheme.
