Mom's Molasses Sugar Cookies

Very moist cookie. From grandma to mom. Especially good all year long, Christmas too.


  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses (dark)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Raspberry jam


In a large pan melt shortening, add sugar, molasses and egg, beat well. Sift dry ingredients, add spices, salt, soda and add this to first mixture.

Mix well - chill.

Roll into 1" balls, roll balls in sugar.

Bake 375 degrees on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, about 2" apart.

Bake 4 minutes, remove from oven. Put 1/4 teaspoon raspberry jam in center of each cookie.

Return to oven bake 4 minutes longer or until you feel the cookie is done.
