A Nutrition Guide For Students

(NC) - With the arrival of September and the end of summer jobs, students have returned to academic life across Canada. Registered dietitian Robin Anderson provides some helpful tips on how students can maintain good nutrition, while managing university or college life.

  • Eat breakfast - You've heard it before, but a healthy breakfast is an important start to your day. Eat a balanced breakfast, including protein, carbohydrates and fruit every day.

  • Don't shop in the middle aisles of the grocery store - If you live off campus, and do your own shopping, try to stay away from the pre-packaged, processed food in the inside aisles of the grocery store. The most fresh and nutritious options are usually found in the outside aisles.

  • Avoid drinking too much pop - Many students regard pop as a convenient and tasty option, especially when running from class to class. But, most sodas are very high in sugar, and can have a tremendous impact on weight gain. In addition, a recent University of Saskatchewan study suggests that girls in their early teens who often drink soft drinks face a life-long increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis.

  • Stay away from an excess of fast food - Fast food has little nutritional value, and can be dangerously high in fat. Do your best to avoid fast food, and certainly don't allow it to become a staple of your diet.

  • Take a multivitamin supplement
