Healthy Snacks For Children and Teens

Contributed by: Nancy Humphries

First let me tell you a little about myself so that you don't think I'm some off the wall nut, I'm still a little nutsey when I work in the kitchen and am creating. I'm Nancy Humphries and I have a degree in Culinary Arts, in other words I'm just your crazy chef whose only intellect is when she is creating or cooking or just being myself in the kitchen.

I love my kitchen and I love what I am doing, I never get tired of it. This exerpt is from the book which I am writing for parents who worry about what their children and teens eat. My biggest love about the kitchen is creating for children and teens, creating meals, snacks and deserts that are healthy. Believe me, children and teens are choosing to eat healthier in our schools with lunch and snacks.

I will be writing several articles about healthy eating for you and your children to follow this one and hope you enjoy reading the articles as much as I've enjoyed writing them.

Along with Kraft ideas and products I have come up with a few recipes for children and teens snacks: Here are a couple of recipes I'm giving you which are in Kraft's monthly magazine called Food and Family.

Recipe # 1 (from Kraft magazine for this month) - Tortilla Roll-ups

  • 6 Flour tortillas
  • Iraft Philadelphia Cream cheese (any flavor or plain low fat or fat free)
  • Kraft American chaese slices low fat
  • Oscar Myers sliced ham (or any low fat luncheon meat such as chicken or turkey etc.)

Take a flour tortilla and spread with cream cheese out about 1" from edge. Slice cheese and ham diagonally and place down center of tortilla. Fold lengthwise and place on microwavable plate.

Finish all tortillas and place in microwave. Heat for 30 secs or until the cheese is melted.

Cut in thirds and serve with fresh fruit and a glass of either fruit juice or milk.

This is part one. Part two will cover natural snacks, when to serve.

Recipe #2 - Wings in Barbeque Sauce

  • 5 or 6 wings per person
  • Barbecue sauce (Find many great Barbeque sauce recipes on
  • Fresh fruit and Veg tray with dips and juice

Have roasted wings ready.

Place wings in a shallow baking dish or roasting pan drizzle with 6 Tablespoons of low fat margarine roast in 400 F degree oven for 20 to 30 minutes drain on paper towel and wipe out excess margarine from pan or dish.

Place wings in a microwave dish and pour barbeque sauce over wings and cover. Refrigerate until needed. When time to serve, microwave wings 4 minutes, remove plastic and turn wings. Return to microwave and heat for 1 minute then cool slightly.

Serve with veg and fruit tray with a fruit dip and Blue cheese salad dressing for vegs.
