(NC) -- Leftover bread takes on a new life in this heavenly pudding, which is a breeze to make. Served warm from the oven, mom is sure to enjoy this tasty treat for dessert or breakfast.

  • 7 1/2-inch (1cm) thick slices stale white bread, cubed
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 can (385 mL) Nestle(r) Carnation(r) Fat Free Evaporated Milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla 5 mL
  • 1 cup water 250 mL
  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar 150 mL
  • 2 large bananas, peeled and sliced Nestle NesQuik(tm) Chocolate syrup or maple syrup

Place bread cubes in large bowl. In separate bowl, beat eggs; stir in evaporated milk, vanilla, water and sugar. Pour over bread mixture, moistening bread completely. Place half of bread mixture in greased 8-inch (2 L) square baking dish. Layer with bananas; top with remaining bread mixture.

Bake in 350 F (180 C) oven for about 55 minutes or until set and top is golden. Serve warm with chocolate or maple syrup.

Tip: To test doneness, insert knife in centre and it should come out clean.
