In a bowl, combine the flour and sugar. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender, until crumbly.
Add the egg and almond extract. Mix well. Set aside 1 cup (250 mL) of the mixture for the top. Press remaining dough in a greased 8" (20cm) square cake pan. Spread the jam on top. Sprinkle reserved crumbles over jam. Bake at 350º F (180º C) for 35 - 40 minutes or until light golden. Quickly sprinkle chocolate chips on top of warm square. Cool completely.
