Healthy Hits The Cookie Aisle

(NAPSA) - During the past 20 years, obesity has risen at an epidemic pace, particularly with children, causing an increased focus on the food people eat.

"People are realizing the consequences of poor eating habits," said registered dietician Sharon McNerney. "As a result, consumers are demanding food that fits into a healthful diet."

The trend toward healthy living has caused even the dessert and gourmet food industries to take note, said McNerney. Jacques Pautrat, master pastry chef and co-founder of Jacques Gourmet, said "guilt-free gourmet" is a new trend.

"People want desserts that not only fit into their diets, but that are also great-tasting," said Pautrat, who first helped introduce low-fat and fat-free meringue cookies to the United States in 1987 with his chain of Champagne French Bakeries. "When people learned the cookies are low-calorie and are naturally fat-free, the demand for the cookies increased," said Pautrat.

This year, Pautrat is introducing Jacques Gourmet Meringue Cookies to grocery stores and mass merchants. "People want gourmet items that satisfy the waistline and the sweet tooth," said McNerney. "And at about 115 calories for 13 cookies, Jacques Gourmet Meringue Cookies are a healthful alternative to other dessert items."

The new meringues have no preservatives or artificial flavors. The cookies, which are kosher parve, are available in French vanilla, chocolate delight, chocolate chip and toasted coconut.

"Meringues can be eaten alone or as part of a dish," said Pautrat.

Ingredients:

  • 1 quart low fat frozen vanilla yogurt or ice cream
  • 6 Jacques Gourmet Chocolate Delight cookies
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries

Directions:

In a champagne flute, layer the frozen yogurt or ice cream with the raspberries and crushed cookies: Yogurt-Raspberry-Yogurt-Cookies-Yogurt.

Repeat until full. Top with the remaining crushed cookies and raspberries.

*Low fat cherry pie filling can be substituted for the raspberries.

Serving Size: Makes 6 Servings
