Fudgy Peanut Butter Buttons

Contributed by: NAPSA

Bake Sale To End Childhood Hunger In America (NAPSA) - Can baking a cake help to end childhood hunger across the nation? It can, say the organizers of a nationwide bake sale created to help America's children get the food they need to learn, grow and thrive.

Fudgy Peanut Butter Buttons
With more than 13 million American children hungry or at risk for hunger, Parade magazine and Share Our Strength, a leading anti-hunger organization, created The Great American Bake Sale. This year's goal is to register 10,000 bake sales and raise $2 million.

All funds raised are donated to Share Our Strength, which will then award grants to nonprofits fighting childhood hunger. Participants have the option of designating funds to hunger programs in areas hit by Hurricane Katrina.

A bake sale can be a fun, effective fund-raising tool. Make baking sweet and simple:

  • Try something different-peanut brittle, fudge, sweet breads and mini muffins add variety to regular bake sale fare.

  • Take a shortcut-use a cake mix or replace water with milk, chocolate milk or flavored soda to add density.

This delicious recipe for Fudgy Peanut Butter Buttons is decadent enough to be a bake sale bestseller:

Prep Time: 20 minutes - Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup hot water
  • 1 box (10 ounces) Swiss Miss(r) Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa Mix (10 packets)
  • 1 jar (18 ounces) Peter Pan(r) Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 3 cups sifted confectioners' sugar, divided
  • 4 cups crushed vanilla wafers
  • PAM(r) for Baking Spray
  • Bittersweet chocolate morsels

Directions:

Whisk together water and cocoa mix in large bowl until smooth. Stir in peanut butter and corn syrup. Add 2 cups confectioners' sugar; blend. Stir in crushed vanilla wafers.

Spray large piece of waxed paper with baking spray. Drop heaping teaspoonfuls of chocolate mixture onto paper; set aside. Place remaining confectioners' sugar in shallow dish. Roll each piece of chocolate mixture in sugar and roll into balls. Press thumb into the center of each ball until slightly indented; place chocolate morsel in middle.

Chill at least 1 hour before serving. Store refrigerated in an airtight container.

Since The Great American Bake Sale began in 2003, more than a million Americans have taken part, raising nearly $3 million. The program is sponsored by ABC Entertainment and Pam for Baking. The stars of ABC's "Hope & Faith" lend their support.
