Perfect for Guests, A Savory Tart
(NewsUSA) - Getting together with family and friends is the best part of the fall and winter holidays. When it's your turn to entertain, you want to offer guests hors d'oeuvres that look sophisticated and elegant but are, in reality, easy and quick. Savory Onion & Apple Tart is just the thing. You can start it hours before, then assemble and pop it under the broiler as guests arrive.
In your market right now, you'll find fresh apples grown in the U.S. that are flavorful and crisp. U.S. apples are, of course, the quintessential healthy snack. You can also count on apples to add flavor and nutrition to everyday meals.
U.S. apples are easy to store in the refrigerator, so stock up to be sure you have plenty of crisp, juicy apples to enjoy every day. Go to www.usapple.org, where you'll find bushels of additional U.S. apple info, recipes and nutrition news.
Preheat oven to 425 F. In large, nonstick skillet, over medium low heat, heat oil. Add onions and half of the apples; cook, stirring occasionally, until they are very soft and begin to caramelize, about 25 minutes (mixture will appear to "melt" and become spreadable).
Meanwhile, coat baking sheet with non-stick spray. Press dough into rectangle on baking sheet. Prick dough all over with fork tines to prevent bubbling. Bake until lightly brown, about 10 minutes; remove from oven. Spread apple and onion mixture over dough; sprinkle with cheese. Just before serving, top with thyme and remaining sliced apples; broil on high until apples begin to wilt, about 1 minute. Cut into squares and serve.
To substitute large prepared baked pizza crust (such as Boboli) for the refrigerated pizza dough, simply omit baking crust.
Serving Size: Makes 16 Appetizer Servings
