Blueberry TLC

Contributed by: Chris, WebAdmin. of RecipesNow.com

It's that time again when fresh blueberries are in peak production, fairly bursting with ripe blueberry flavor. Here are some tips to help you make the most of blueberry season. When buying blueberries, remember that size is not an indicator of ripeness. But color is--ripe berries are deep purple-blue to blue-black. While berries that are reddish in color may not make great snacking, they are just fine for cooking.

Store fresh blueberries unwashed in their original container in the refrigerator. Wash the amount you need just before using. For best results, use within 10 days of purchase. Convenient, frozen blueberries are available in the freezer section of your supermarket. When buying them in bags, be sure they are loose - avoid those that are clumped together. Store frozen berries in your home freezer, removing just the amount you need for your recipe. Thawed berries should be used within 3 days. Commercially frozen blueberries are pre-washed so there is no need to wash them before use.

It's easy to freeze your own blueberries: Transfer unwashed berries to airtight plastic bags, or arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet; then, when completely frozen, transfer to plastic bags or freezer containers. When freezing your own blueberries, remember to wash them just before using.
