Contest Calls For Slow-Cooker Recipes

(NAPSA) - A new contest asks slow-cooker connoisseurs to cook up some original recipes. The event is expected to uncover a number of tantalizing treats-more than 130 million slow cookers have been sold in the U.S. alone, and slow-cook chefs are famously creative cooks.

The contest, called the Crock-tober(tm) Cook-off, lets amateur chefs enter in either of two recipe categories: "chilis/soups/sauces/stews," or "other main dishes." Professional chefs or those enrolled in a culinary academic program, can enter in the "low-carbohydrate main dish" or "slow cooker innovations categories."

The contest is sponsored by Rival(r) Crock-Pot(r) slow cooker. Entries must be postmarked or transmitted online between October 1 and October 31, 2004.

The company offers this recipe to help get people's creative juices flowing:

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 lbs pork roast
  • 1 14-oz bottle of your favorite barbecue sauce
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbs fresh lemon juice
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 8 hamburger buns or hard rolls

Directions:

Place the pork roast in the slow cooker. Cover; cook on low for 10 to 12 hours or on high for 5 to 6 hours. Remove the pork roast from the stoneware, and pull the meat into shredded pieces. Pour out any liquid in the stoneware, and combine pork with the remaining ingredients in the slow cooker. Cook on high for 2 hours. Serve the barbecue pork on hamburger buns or hard rolls.

One first prize winner in each amateur category will win groceries for a year, up to a maximum of $2,500. Winners in the professional category will be sent on an eight day, seven night European Taste Tour.
